Album: The Bride (2016)

Songfacts®:

  • This is the opening track of The Bride, a concept album that follows the story of a woman who is abandoned at the altar when her fiancé is killed on his way to the wedding. The record was written by Bat For Lashes (aka Natasha Khan) to coincide with I Do, a short film written and directed by the singer.
  • This sentimental song finds the still-single Khan singing from the perspective of a woman longing to tie the knot. "When I first sang it, I almost couldn't get through it because I felt so vulnerable," she admitted to The Guardian. "Even though it's not feminist, I want that feeling of being complete because I'm with someone. It's such an uncool but desperate longing in all of us."
  • Khan told NME: "When I wrote that song I was thinking about how romance is projected to us in society through films and fairy tales; and the whole idea that finding the right person will complete you. We all have the capacity to feel that - it's part of the beauty of falling in love - but I think it can be quite misleading and a little bit dangerous."
