Songfacts®:

  • Also spelt Pep-ti-kon, this tonic has a heavy alcohol content. It was also what gave B.B. King his big break, as he explained himself in the 2012 BBC documentary B.B. King: The Life Of Riley.

WDIA was the first dedicated black music radio station in America, although it was started by two white men, first broadcasting on June 7, 1947. One day, the young Riley King turned up at its headquarters and asked co-founder Dick Ferguson if he could make a record for him. Ferguson told him they didn't cut records, but in what was to be an inspirational moment he said there was a new product called Pepticon and asked King if he could write a jingle for it. King said he could, and came up with:

    Pepticon sure is good
    Pepticon sure is good
    Pepticon sure is good
You can get it anywhere in your neighbourhood

And he was hired on the spot. >>>
