Songfacts®:

  • In this sentimental acoustic track, Beabadoobee reflects on a relationship that has faded. She sings about the good and bad times, and how she's finding peace as that's just "the way things go." Bea wrote the song with her guitarist and producer Jacob Bigden.
  • "The Way Things Go" gently unfolds with Beabadoobee baring her soul as she confesses there's still so much left unsaid. She assumes the role of the bigger person, gracefully shrugging off the aftermath of the shattered relationship.
  • In the first verse, Beabadoobee spells out her ex's bad behavior.

Didn't think you'd ever stoop so low
Getting with the only girl you know
A lousy route that only makes me say
"That's pretty lame and that's the way things go"
Oh, I guess that's just the way things go

She dated British director Soren Harrison for around seven years before splitting up in June 2022. Bea first posted this verse through her TikTok story after Harrison began a relationship with her best friend Fiona.

Bea's voice in the chorus hints at the fading memories of her time with this person. She can barely remember what once made them special and the memory feels distant, like wishful thinking. She subtly hints at the partner's shortcomings – missed calls, distance, and love that only occasionally shone through. The flaws were evident, but she accepts that this is just the way things go in life and love.
  • By the second verse, Bea has moved on and found peace. As she passes his house on a train, memories of the past linger, but she's content with her new reality. Happiness fills her heart, and she finds solace in letting go.
  • After breaking up with Harrison, Beabadoobee started dating photographer Jacob Erland. Her boyfriend directed the video, which features the singer alongside a cast of ballerinas in an ornately decorated room. Bugden plays a painter in the background, and at one point he and Bea drink glasses of champagne delivered by a tumbling waiter.
