Songfacts®:

  • Beck wrote the Hyperspace album on acoustic guitar before fashioning the tracks into a party-ready mix of art rock, R&B and hip-hop beats. He told Mojo magazine that the trippy "Chemical" defines his approach. "There are definitely psychedelic rock aspects to the melody," he said. "And it has almost nothing to do with modern pop all Trap music at all. But I feel like the idea of those things coexisting."
  • Seven of the album's 11 tracks, including this song, were co-written and co-produced by Pharrell Williams. During this tripped-out electronica number, Williams contorts Beck's voice like a balloon animal.
  • Brent Paschke contributes guitar to this track. Paschke is a touring member of Pharrell Williams' group N.E.R.D.
