Songfacts®:

  • This haunting slice of dream-pop is one of seven collaborations between Beck and producer Pharrell Williams on Hyperspace. Beck told NME the pair have been friendly for a number of years and talked about making some music back in 2012. It didn't work out then because Pharrell was really busy and ended up putting out a song with Daft Punk, then 'Blurred Lines' and 'Happy.' Beck eventually seized the moment with this record.
  • Over chiming glockenspiel and a jittery bassline, Beck sings of being stuck in between something. But what?

    Uneventful days, uneventful nights
Living in that dark, waiting for the light
Caught up in these never ending battle lines
Everything has changed and nothing it feels right

"I couldn't quite place what it was," Beck told Apple Music. "It's like those moments in the aftermath of a period of time. Like a new job in a new town. You're standing in an empty apartment, staring out the window at a palm tree."
  • The Dev Hynes-directed video co-stars Avengers actress Tessa Thompson and her Westworld co-star, Evan Rachel Wood. Arrested Development actress Alia Shawkat also features.

There are several nods to past Beck visuals, including Wood's red shirt with white fringes; a similar one was seen in his "Sexx Laws" clip. Also, Thompson's cowboy get-up resembles Beck's outfit in his "Devil's Haircut" video.
  • St. Vincent recorded a '70s funk-infused remix inspired by the likes of Herbie Hancock and War. When she sent it to Beck, he had her up the tempo by three beats per minute, which she says "made all the difference in the groove."
