Songfacts®:

  • This complicated love song about a couple struggling to maintain an unhealthy relationship is a duet between Bedouin Soundclash singer Jay Malinowski and his then-girlfriend Beatrice Martin (who performs as Coeur de pirate).

"'Brutal Hearts' is directly what it seems to be about," Malinowski confirmed in a 2022 Songfacts interview. "I think it's basically about two people who are very much leaning on each other, and probably not in their best state. That song is definitely very real."
  • Malinowski and Martin formed a short-lived side project called Armistice, which produced an EP in 2011.
  • This is the Canadian reggae-rock band's first album without drummer Pat Pengelly, who left the group in 2009 to pursue a law degree. He's replaced on Light The Horizon by Sekou Lumumba of the post-grunge band Thornley.
