Songfacts®:

  • The title track of American folk band Beirut's third album alludes to the unstoppable momentum of their career. Frontman Zach Condon explained to Mojo magazine: "What got me thinking about it was our trip to Brazil. I got sucked out in a rip tide there. I was fighting my way back to the beach and a wave crushed me and punctured a hole in my eardrum. All the time in Brazil I was really excited but also miserable because at every concert all I could hear was distortion…
When I started up the song the title was already there, 'Rip Tide,' although I just found out it's the name of a really bad '80s buddy-cop show."
