Songfacts®:

  • This passionate song describes a couple who meet under the moonlight, seemingly by fate. They have a night of vivid romance, but then she leaves him, never to see him again. By the end of the song, she is walking the streets on a cold, gray day, wondering what could have been.

The song was written by Ellen Shipley and Rick Nowels, who wrote several of Carlisle's hits, including the #1 "Heaven Is A Place On Earth." In a Songfacts interview with Shipley, she explained: "I love that song. I was in the studio with Rick and we were recording something. They were doing drum tracks or whatever and I got bored and walked into a room that had a piano. I sat down at the piano and I just heard this music. I heard this whole sort of Spanish-flavored thing, and so I quickly got someone to record what I was doing and I called it "La Luna."

It was about a particular love that I had had, and then Rick, of course, always has to add his stuff. So, sometimes the lyrics are meant to be someplace but people interpret them as they want to. But, 'La Luna,' we just wrote a story based on our lives of different people that came and went and people that we wished we could see again or didn't. But we wrote a story about being in Paris and in the room, so that does have a sexual connotation - it's a passionate song."
  • "La Luna" is Spanish for "the moon." The song has a Flamenco feel, with an accordion played by Jimmy Haskell and a violin by Sid Page. At the end of the song, Carlisle has relocated to France, as she sings about walking the streets of Marseille.
  • A track from Carlisle's third album, "La Luna" wasn't released as a single in America, but was in Europe and Australia.
  • Andy Morahan directed the video, which for some reason has a Victorian theme, with Carlisle singing most of the song from under the covers in a bed.
