Songfacts®:

  • This is a track from American singer-songwriter musician Ben Harper and his backing band, Relentless7. The outfit comprises previous Harper collaborator Jason Mozerksy on guitar and two members of the Austin-cum-L.A. outfit Oliver Future: bassist Jesse Ingalls and drummer Jordan Richardson. Harper explained to Rolling Stone: "It's called Relentless7. It's just a name that has been kicking around in my consciousness. I always said that if I got another band together, I'm gonna call them Relentless7."
  • White Lies For Dark Times is the first album Harper recorded with Relentless7. Rolling Stone asked him what happened to his usual backing band, the Innocent Criminals: "Dude, I've been with the Innocent Criminals a long time, and I'll always be with the Innocent Criminals," he said. "And everything I do now helps further what I do with them. But for the moment, it's just time to do something else."
  • On this song Harper fights with his former lover who has ended their relationship with an angry letter written in her "favorite colors, blood and black."
