Songfacts®:

  • This is the opening number and title track from California indie rockers Best Coast's second album. The song is an ode to vocalist Bethany Cosentino's native state. "Why would you live anywhere else?" she sings. "We've got the ocean/got the babes/got the ocean/got the waves."
  • Cosentino still feels most relaxed in her native state as illustrated by the album cover art, which shows a black bear embracing a map silhouette of California. "I wrote these songs in a place of feeling homesick and confused about myself and my personal growth," she told Billboard magazine.
