Songfacts®:

  • Jessica Anne Newham is an Australian singer-songwriter who records under the name of Betty Who. She moved to the American city of Boston and attended the Berklee College Of Music, where she met producer Peter Thomas. This is her debut single, which she penned with Thomas and was initially released independently as a free download. The song garnered immediate praise, spreading quickly online and was included on her debut EP The Movement. The record helped Newham obtain a recording contract with RCA in the fall of 2013.
  • The song was inspired by the tragic death of Whitney Houston in early 2012. "Two days after she passed away, we were in the studio listening to lots of classics and it made me realize that there's no joy in pop music right now," Newham told Digital Spy. "The message is either 'you hurt me' or 'let's get down in the club.' I wanted to write a song that would make people feel happy and that's where 'Somebody Loves You' comes from."
  • This was used as the soundtrack for a viral video of an elaborate marriage proposal set in a Home Depot that racked up more than 13 million views. Spencer and Dustin, the stars of the clip, got married in February 2014 and Betty Who was a guest at their nuptials. "That was probably the most rewarding and beautiful part of that entire experience," she told Billboard magazine, "because 10 million people can watch a video with your song in it, but none of it matters if you don't get to sit and watch and cry as these two men walk down the aisle."
  • This became Betty Who's first Billboard chart-topper when it climbed to #1 on Dance Club Songs in February 2014.
  • Who explained to Billboard magazine this is, "a song about nothing but being in love and telling someone that you love them so much… Whether it's your mom, your cat, your boyfriend, your girlfriend or your best friend, someone always cares about you in this world."
