Songfacts®:

  • Here, Beyoncé borrows the hook and cinematic synth line from Kilo Ali and DJ Taz's iconic '90s Miami bass track "America Has a Problem (Cocaine)." Kilo Ali's synth line takes center stage, riding a relentless wave of rapid-fire club beats.
  • Kilo Ali's original track spins around the twisted tale of cocaine's allure, using a woman as its metaphorical vessel.

Enter Bey, the embodiment of that woman. She likens herself to the white powder, flaunting the irresistible qualities that keep Jay-Z hooked, craving more and coming back for another hit.

Call me when you wanna get hi-i-i-igh
    Tony Montana with the racks
Ivy P on my bag, double G's on my dash

"Ivy P on my bag," is a reference to Beyoncé's clothing label Ivy Park.
  • Beyoncé recorded "America Has a Problem" for Renaissance. After the release of the album, the song debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 chart at #69.
  • Beyoncé co-wrote the song with:

Singer, songwriter, and record producer The-Dream. Terius "The-Dream" Nash has co-penned some of the biggest smashes of the first two decades of the 20th century. They include Rihanna's "Umbrella," Beyoncé's "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on it)," and Justin Bieber's "Baby."

Hip-hop record producer and engineer Mike Dean, who has worked with some of the biggest names in music, including Kanye West, Travis Scott, and The Weeknd. His signature sound is characterized by his use of distortion, compression, and reverb.

Beyoncé's husband, Jay-Z. He contributed to the writing of two other tracks on Renaissance: "Break My Soul," and "Alien Superstar."

Beyoncé, Dean and The-Dream produced the energetic track.
  • Beyoncé released a remix of the song with a new breakneck verse from Kendrick Lamar as a single on May 19, 2023.
  • Lamar kicks off the revamped version with a shout-out to his new entertainment venture, pgLang, a collaboration with producer and filmmaker Dave Free. But he doesn't stop there - this car-loving wordsmith flexes his garage full of treasures, proving he's got the keys to any model you can dream of.

But don't mistake Kendrick's peace-promoting persona for weakness. In a bold declaration, he admits to occasionally fibbing in his rhymes, conveniently leaving out the fact that he's not afraid to put a fellow rapper in their place with a swift slap. No life insurance can save their career from his lyrical wrath, and he hopes their loyal fans have all the facts on hand.

As the verse continues, Kendrick proudly declares himself an honorary member of the Beyhive, and dives into the hot topic of artificial intelligence. Fear not, he assures us, no computer can match his cleverness. That's a skill even science can't replicate.
  • When it comes to the rap hierarchy, Kendrick humbly embraces his position as #2 on Billboard's top-rappers list, right after the incomparable Jay-Z.

    Billboard, they know
Out for us, ride or else
    After Hov, rightfully so
    Bust for us, not us

On their February 2023 list of the Best Rappers of All Time, Billboard put Kendrick Lamar as their #2, just below Jay-Z (Hova), with Nas, 2Pac, and Eminem rounding out the top five. Lamar recognizes the prestige of his placement and asserts his rightful position in the game.
  • This is the third time Beyoncé and Lamar have collaborated on a song together. They first worked together on Beyoncé's 2016 track "Freedom" from her album Lemonade. Their second collaboration was on "Nile," a tune from Beyoncé's 2019 soundtrack album The Lion King: The Gift.
  • Columbia Records and Beyoncé's Parkwood Entertainment, the same labels behind Renaissance, released the remix. This time, the company pgLang, founded by K-Dot, backed the song as well.
  • Beyoncé brought out surprise guest Kendrick Lamar to perform their remix of "America Has a Problem" during the final show of her three-night Renaissance World Tour run at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California on September 4, 2023. It was the first time the remix was performed live.
