Songfacts®:

  • Beyoncé's second single from her fourth solo album, 4 is this Babyface penned midtempo tune about karma and revenge. It kicks off with Beyoncé singing, "What goes around comes back around," before she proceeds to take a pop at a former lover after discovering his deceitful ways.
  • Kenny "Babyface" Edmond is an American R&B and pop singer-songwriter, who is best known for his contribution to the creation of new jack swing in the late 1980s. Among the many artists he has credits for are Bobby Brown ("On Our Own", "Every Little Step") and Boyz II Men ("End of the Road," "I'll Make Love To You"). He also penned Beyoncé's 2009 single "Broken-Hearted Girl."
  • The other principal songwriter was Patrick "J. Que" Smith, who is part of the production group "The Clutch." He has also contributed to hit tunes by Usher ("Yeah!"), Ciara ("Like a Boy") and Britney Spears ("Radar").
  • Concerning the penning of the song, Smith told Black Entertainment Television that he was in Los Angeles when he got a call from the song's co-producer Antonio Dixon, for whom he has been writing for years, telling him that they were going to do some work with Beyoncé. Smith wrote part of the song during his journey to the L.A. studio to join the rest of the team. Once he arrived at the studio, Dixon joined him and they completed the song together. After hearing the record, Babyface made some modifications, according to Smith: "You know—a word here, a word there, a melody here, and all of a sudden the record had a completely new life. He [Babyface] is absolutely masterful at what he does. And I'm super honored to be working with dude."
  • The Diane Martel directed music video was shot in Westchester County on June 15, 2011 and in Fort Greene, Brooklyn, on June 16, 2011. The "prom scene" shoot was filmed at the Brooklyn Masonic Temple near the Pratt Institute and the wedding scene, at a Sleepy Hollow country club.
