Songfacts®:

  • This song takes place in a club, where Beyoncé is letting the male patrons know that they're welcome to come and look at her bootylicious body when she's dancing. Just don't try to grab it.
  • The song starts with a verse from Slim Thug, who encourages Bey to do her thing while he checks up on it. Later, Bun B drops a verse as he checks in to watch her twerk it. Slim Thug had recently released his debut album, Already Platinum.
  • This was billed as a Beyoncé solo single, but it also appears on the Destiny's Child's hits album #1's. Beyoncé's Destiny's Child bandmates Michelle Williams and Kelly Rowland are credited with vocal production, and Rowland sings backup.
  • Swizz Beatz produced the track and wrote the song along with Beyoncé, Young Thug, Bun B, Angie Beyince and Sean Garrett. Beyince is Beyoncé's cousin; Garrett is a songwriter who was red-hot, with credits on "Yeah!" by Usher and "London Bridge" by Fergie.
  • "Check On It" plays in the closing credits of the 2006 movie The Pink Panther, where Beyoncé plays a pop star who gets caught up in the mystery. At one point in the film, she tries to seduce Steve Martin's Inspector Clouseau, but is foiled when he drops his Viagra down the drain. The song has nothing to do with the plot and doesn't appear on the soundtrack.

The film went to #1 at the box office on February 12, 2006, during the song's five-week run at the top of the Hot 100. This made Beyoncé just the third person with a #1 movie and song at the same time. The others were Prince (Purple Rain and "When Doves Cry") and Eminem (8 Mile and "Lose Yourself").
  • This video directed by Hype Williams won best R&B Video at the 2006 MTV Video Music Awards. on MTV's Making Of The Video, Beyoncé said: "The song is so fun, it makes you feel like a child again and we wanted to put some of that in the choreography and the feel of the video. It's all about checking on yourself and making sure you're moving tight and your man admiring how you move. It's simple."
  • We have 50 Cent to thank for popularizing the word "wanksta," as dropped by Slim Thug in his verse:

"You need to stop playing 'round with all them clowns and the wankstas."

In his 2002 song "Wanksta," 50 explains how it's a wannabe gangsta.
  • "Check On It" was Beyoncé's third #1 hit, following "Crazy In Love" and "Baby Boy."
  • The first single from Destiny's Child's album #1's was "Stand Up For Love," which became their first singe not to chart in the US. This was the second single from the album, and it fared much better. >>>
