Songfacts®:

  • This percussion-heavy track from Beyoncé's fourth studio album, 4, features marching band-esque drums coupled to lyrics about a love cherished.

    Come take my hand
    I won't let you go
    I'll be your friend
I will love you so, deeply
I will be the one to kiss you at night
I will love you until the end of time
  • The song was co-written by The-Dream, who also penned Beyoncé's girl-power anthem "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)" plus several other tracks on 4. The other writers are Shea Taylor, Beyoncé, and Switch. It features production from "Run The World (Girls)" beatmakers Diplo and Switch along with The-Dream.
  • The groundbreaking Nigerian musician and composer Fela Kuti, who died in 1997, inspired the song's bass line. Beyoncé came across his music through Jay-Z - her husband helped produced the hit Broadway musical Fela!, which celebrates the life and work of the African star. Beyoncé told Billboard magazine how Kuti inspired not only this tune, but also other tracks on 4. "I started off being inspired by Fela Kuti," she said. "I actually worked with the band from Fela! for a couple of days, just to get the feel for the soul and heart of his music; it's so sexy, and has a great groove you get lost in. I loved his drums, all the horns, how everything was on the one. What I learned most from Fela was artistic freedom: he just felt the spirit."
  • Beyoncé included a snippet of this song in her set when she played the Super Bowl halftime show in 2013.
