Songfacts®:

  • This was one off the first songs to be released by Beyoncé Knowles off her fifth solo album. The tune was produced by Timbaland and features his signature beat boxing. It debuted on April 8, 2013.
  • Beyoncé announced the song's release on 4/4/2013 continuing a tradition of the singer's fascination with the number four (such as titling her fourth album after the numeral). The date also marked her fifth wedding anniversary with Jay-Z.
  • The song was first previewed in a minute-long ad for Pepsi, titled "Mirrors," which shows Beyoncé dancing in front of a mirror, before coming face to face with her past and reliving many of her different musical and style incarnations.
  • Coincidentally, Beyonce's fellow Destiny's Child member Kelly Rowland released a single with the same title back in 2010. Rowland's "Grown Woman" was written by Ne-Yo with the lyrics revolving around the narrator asserting her maturity when it comes to relationships. It peaked at #51 on the US Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Chart.
  • Beyoncé debuted the song on April 24, 2013 during the Paris leg of her The Mrs. Carter Show Tour.
  • Though no audio version of "Grown Woman" appears on Beyoncé, a music video directed by Jake Nava is available at the end of the tracklist. The clip features cameo appearances by Kelly Rowland and Beyoncé's mom, Tina.
  • The track was finally released to streaming platforms on December 13, 2023 to mark the 10th anniversary of the Beyoncé album.
