Songfacts®:

  • This moody and dark ballad finds Beyoncé singing of a relationship where she cares about her man but he doesn't reciprocate. The Texan songstress tells him how she feels but the man ignores her pleas. Beyoncé croons: "I told you how you hurt me/ I'm crying and deserted but you don't care/ Nobody told me this is love/ You're immune to all my pain/ This is love but that's okay… But I care/ I know you don't care too much/ But I still care."
  • During a pre release listening party for 4 one fan asked Beyoncé if she was crying at the beginning of the song as it sounded like she was? "Almost," she replied. "I was on the verge."
  • The song was co-written and produced by Jeff Bhasker. The Neptunes producer Chad Hugo also has a writing credit, alongside Beyoncé herself. Bhasker's resume also features contributions to hits by Jay-Z ("Run This Town"), Alicia Keys ("Try Sleeping With a Broken Heart") and Kanye West ("Power").
  • Jeff Bhasker originally earmarked this for his solo debut album under the name Billy Kraven before it got cherry-picked for 4.
