Songfacts®:

  • Beyoncé teamed up with Frank Ocean to pen this heartfelt ballad. Christopher Breaux (born October 28, 1987), better known by his stage name of Frank Ocean, is an American singer-songwriter from New Orleans. He evacuated his home city just as Hurricane Katrina hit in August 2005, and stayed in Los Angeles to pursue a music career. After landing songwriting gigs and meeting Tricky Stewart, Breaux signed a contract with Def Jam Recordings as an artist. However, he found himself ignored by the company and in protest at the end of 2009, Breaux joined the hip hop collective, OFWGKTA whom he'd met through mutual friends. In 2010, he changed his name from Christopher Breaux to Christopher Francis Ocean via a legal website.
  • Beyoncé told Complex magazine the first time she came across Frank Ocean: "Jay had a CD playing in the car one Sunday when we were driving to Brooklyn," she recalled." "I noticed his tone, his arrangements, and his storytelling. I immediately reached out to him — literally the next morning. I asked him to fly to New York and work on my record."
