Songfacts®:

  • Tems and Grace Jones join Beyoncé for this empowering dance anthem. During the call-to-arms, Queen Bey commands the crowd to step away as she enters the dance floor.

    Move out the way
I'm with my girls and we all need space
When the queen come through, part like the Red Sea

The Old Testament book of Exodus tells of the escape of the Israelites, led by Moses, from the pursuing Egyptians. When they arrived on the shore of the Red Sea, Moses held out his staff and God split the waters into two, making a dry path for them to cross to the other side and escape the Egyptians. Likewise, as Beyoncé enters the dance floor, she expects everybody else to part as the Red Sea did for Moses.
  • Veteran singer Grace Jones provides additional vocals on the chorus and refrain, and up-and-coming Nigerian artist Tems croons the interlude. The three generations of Black female artists all channel girl power. It is the first time Beyoncé has featured two female artists on a studio album track.
  • Beyoncé, Tems and Grace Jones co-wrote "Move" with Nova Wav, Ari PenSmith, and the song's producers, P2J and Guilty Beatz.

The songwriting/production duo Nova Wav worked on half of the 16 Renaissance tracks. British Nigerian-producer P2J's other credits include Stormzy's "Bad Boys," Dave's "Titanium," and Wizkid's "Essence." British writer-producer Ari PenSmith and P2J previously collaborated with rapper Goldlink on his Diaspora album and with Doja Cat on her Hot Pink track "Addicted."
  • Beyoncé, P2J, and Ghanaian producer GuiltyBeatz's bass-led production fuses afrobeats, hip-house, and dancehall. They previously collaborated with Bey on her The Lion King: The Gift project. P2J contributed to six tracks, including "Brown Skin Girl," and GuiltyBeatz had three production credits.
