Songfacts®:

  • After dealing with Jay-Z's infidelity and venting her anger on the first half of Lemonade, a vulnerable Beyoncé is now ready to reconcile. She compares their relationship on this emotional, piano-driven ballad to sandcastles. Though the waves of broken marital promises have washed away the castles they had built together, she is now ready to start again.
  • Beyoncé wrote the song with:

Singer-songwriter Vincent Berry II, who mainly works with gospel artists like James Fortune and Karen Clark Sheard. He is the one playing the piano on the ballad. Berry also co-produced the song with Bey.

Chicago spoken word artist Malik Yusef, who has worked with Kanye West on a number of occasions. He received a Grammy Award in 2011 for Best Rap Song as a co-writer of the My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy track "All of the Lights."

Los Angeles singer-songwriter Midian Mathers, whose other credits include Nico & Vinz's Cornerstone track "Our Love."
  • Beyonce's sister Solange has also recorded a song titled after beach fortifications. She released a single titled "Sandcastle Disco" in 2008, which became her second song to reach #1 on the Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart.
  • Fun Fact: Research revealed in 2007 that more Americans have been killed by sandcastles since 1990 than by sharks.
