Songfacts®:

  • This slow, dreamy number is the title track of Runga's debut album, which hit the #1 spot in her native New Zealand, where it went 7x Platinum and bagged the Album of the Year award. The 21-year-old Runga wrote the entire album, produced it, and played most of the instruments on it, although "Drive," which runs to 2 minutes 47 seconds, consists of only her vocal accompanied by acoustic guitar. >>>

  • In a short webnote The Stories Behind The Songs on the record "Drive", Runga said "Drive" was "written a few minutes before my first solo gig in Auckland - I didn't have enough songs to make up a 40 minute set. That's a good indication of the way I like to work, I work well under pressure and I think that the best songs write themselves. They don't feel labored over. The demo version was released as a single, and for the album we tried to record it lots of different ways but they didn't work. It has to be simple."

She added that the line "rain falls from the concrete colored sky" used to be "rain falls like custard from the sky," "but it doesn't!"
