Songfacts®:

  • In a July 2008 interview on the New Zealand Talk Talk program, host Finlay Macdonald introducing Bic Runga said her ambition in high school was to be a poet, a musician and a painter, adding "one out of three ain't bad."

"Gravity" actually makes it two out of three, because this song, originally called "Night Will Close Us Down," is sheer poetry.

Although the charming Miss Runga can pen a melody or two, the outstanding feature of her songs is unquestionably their imagery. With "Say After Me" we are told "love ends in a fire" - as it does for some people, and with "Sorry" we see her sweeping her unspoken apologies around the kitchen floor until they swell up inside her "like the kitchen sponge."

"Gravity," which was used in the 1999 New Zealand film Channelling Baby, conjures up the most delightful images of gravity literally letting us go and floating off to meet her somewhere past the satellites while all our secrets melt like ice. >>>
