• In May 2018, Frightened Rabbit vocalist Scott Hutchinson took his own life after a lengthy battle with depression and anxiety. A friend of Biffy Clyro, Hutchinson's death deeply affected their frontman Simon Neil. The singer told The Sun this song wrote itself after he "couldn't escape my feelings about poor Scott's family."
• Both Scott Hutchinson and the death of another friend of the band, Dan Martin, inspired the song's theme of dealing with loss. Former NME journalist Dan Martin died aged 41 in July 2020. Their passing made Neil question his own propensity for depression.

  Like a lot of creative people, Neil struggles with dark thoughts. He explained: "If you're that way inclined, you realize you're staring at darkness, but you don't want to succumb. Those moments don't stop. As the song says, 'The devil never leaves.' There's never a day where you wake up thinking, 'I feel great, it won't cross me ever again.'"
• Biffy Clyro released the slow-building track as the lead single from The Myth of the Happily Ever After on September 3, 2021. They debuted the song during their gig on Glasgow Green six days later.
