Songfacts®:

  • Picture this: Sesame Street's Big Bird is in a cage, crying and wishing he could go home, and singing to a little music box. This is the scenario for the story behind this song that songwriter Randy Sharp was handed. So he and co-writer Karen Brooks happily began scribbling.

It came about, says Randy, when Warner Brothers Films "sent a request to the Nashville publishing office, where I was writing, to supply the songs. And they sent a script. And the head of Warner's Publishing in Nashville divvied up the songs that were just sketched out in the script, what kind of song they were looking for."

Big Bird singing his words, Randy confesses, "Made me more popular amongst all the cousins and the nephews than anything I've ever done." (Read more in our interview with Randy Sharp.)
