  • Frontman Mike Weaver was going through a difficult time as he'd nearly lost his brother, Big Daddy Weave bassist Jay Weaver, who'd had both of his feet amputated. He recalled to NewReleaseToday that singer-songwriter Zach Williams, who was was touring with Big Daddy Weave at the time, played "Alive" to him during a bus ride. "It was so powerful because it captured the season we had gone through," he said. The band decided that they wanted to record the song right away.

Williams added that the song was perfect timing, "With us coming out of a season of hardship into a season of light."
  • The song's chorus starts with a paraphrase of Ephesians 2 v4-5:

    But God, rich in mercy
    You came to save me
    Now I'm alive

When Big Daddy Weave sing the chorus of "Alive" in concert, the people put their fists in the air, celebrating God's mercy. Weaver explained: "That's the Gospel. The mercy of God intersected with our humanity. And we all have our own instances of that. I love how we all have our own examples of that, and the song gives a voice to our experiences with God, which is what we are celebrating in this song."
