Songfacts®:

  • Big Mountain is a San Diego-based reggae band best known for their 1994 cover of Peter Frampton's "Baby, I Love Your Way." Frampton's original is a rock classic; his version was first released in 1975 but became much more famous in live form when it appeared on his 1976 album Frampton Comes Alive.

Big Mountain were asked to cover the song for the soundtrack of the movie Reality Bites, a Gen X touchstone starring Winona Ryder, Ethan Hawke and Ben Stiller. Frampton's version is in the film; it plays in a scene where Stiller and Ryder are making a connection. The studio didn't have the rights to use his version on the soundtrack, though, so that's where Big Mountain came in. Their cover isn't in the movie but is on the soundtrack.
  • Big Mountain had a song called "Touch My Light" that went to #51 in the summer of 1993. It got some airplay in Southern California, which happens to be where movies like Reality Bites were made, so that's probably how they got the gig. The movie was targeted to a young audience and filled with a combination of older songs they'd recognize from their parents' record collections and newer tunes suitable for their mixtapes. The big hit from the movie was "Stay" by Lisa Loeb, but the film also revived "My Sharona," a 1979 song by The Knack. The Big Mountain version of "Baby, I Love Your Way" was released as a single and went to #6, higher than Frampton's original, which topped out at #12. The Reality Bites soundtrack ended up selling over 2 million copies.
  • The song was part of a reggae trend in pop music that started with UB40's cover of "Red Red Wine" and played out with "Close To You" by Maxi Priest, "Sweat (A La La La La Long)" by Inner Circle, and "Informer" by Snow.

Big Mountain had some Jamaican members, but their frontman Quino McWhinney is of Mexican descent. This gives "Baby, I Love Your Way" the distinction of being the biggest reggae hit of the era fronted by an American singer. UB40 and Maxi Priest are British, and Snow is Canadian.
  • The song's success lies in nostalgia and novelty. It came 18 years after Frampton's original was a hit, which is when a new generation was ready to discover it. And the reggae sound was still considered adventurous. "Reggae was novel, and we were hip and cool and young," Big Mountain frontman Quino McWhinney said. "It was like we were bringing this new exotic music to the soundtrack."
  • Big Mountain made two more chart appearances, going to #80 with "Sweet Sensual Love" later in 1994 and to #44 in 1996 with a cover of "Get Together" by The Youngbloods. The band toured until about 2005, then resumed in 2013 under the guidance of McWhinney.
  • The song was produced by Ron Fair, whose many accomplishments include producing The Pussycat Dolls.
  • The music video, which combines band footage with scenes from Reality Bites, did pretty well on MTV.
  • Big Mountain's "Baby I Love Your Way" has a role in the movies Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle (2017) and Jumanji: The Next Level (2019). In the films, the song triggers the superpower of Ruby Roundhouse (played by Karen Gillan), which is dance fighting.
