Songfacts®:

  • Here, Big Sean celebrates the single life as he speaks about breaking up a romantic relationship and being better off by himself.

    I'm single again
Told her we'll be better off friends
Maybe I should just focus on me
And slow down, don't rush romance

Sean said: "I never knew that I didn't know how to be alone in life. I always would find so much joy n happiness in a relationship or being with friends, but I didn't know how important it was to be in a relationship with yourself."
  • Sean's former-girlfriend and Twenty88 collaborator Jhené Aiko supplies warm backing vocals to the somber tune; the pair were a couple from February 2016 until late 2018. Aiko's contribution suggests she understands the situation and isn't bitter about the breakup. She'd previously expressed her emotions about their doomed relationship on the single "Triggered (Freestyle)."

Their split lasted until about two years. In 2021, Sean and Aiko attended the Grammy Awards together, and in 2022 they had a child named Noah Hasani.
  • Ty Dolla $ign turns up later in the song with some additional background vocals.
  • The video was directed by Lawrence Lamont and shot in several spots in Detroit, including Spirit Plaza and a beauty shop on Livernois Avenue. The clip centers on the rapper literally being put on trial for infidelity in the court of public opinion. A couple, played by Ryan Destiny and Keith Powers, ponder their own rocky relationship, while comedian Haha Davis also has a cameo. Big Sean said:

"The video has a lot of important messages, but the main one is for people to ‘wake up and smell the roses' in a world where we wake up and check our phones instead."
