  • This dreamy pop ballad was our introduction to Billie Eilish, who posted it to SoundClound in November 2015 when she was just 13. It quickly went viral, and in March 2016, Eilish released a video for the song directed by Megan Thompson. Interscope Records swooped in to sign her and gave the song a major-label release in November 2016 along with a promotional push touting their now-14-year-old soon-to-be superstar.

At the time, Eilish was often compared to Lorde, but it quickly became clear that she defied comparisons. In "Ocean Eyes," she sings about being captivated by a guy who can transport her with his stare - sentimental stuff. With her next singles, Eilish showed a very different side, releasing nefarious songs like "Bellyache" (where she kills her friends and puts their bodies in her car) that proved there was a profound depth to her work. When her debut album was released in 2019, she became a household name and added to her already huge and strident following.
  • Finneas O'Connell originally wrote "Ocean Eyes" for his band but he let his sister have it when she needed a song to choreograph a dance to. Eilish recalled to Vogue:

"He came into my room in October of last year to tell me he had this song called 'Ocean Eyes.' He'd been doing it with his band before, but of course I'd heard it because I was right next door. I sang it, and we both loved it. It's just a beautiful song, and Finneas is an amazing writer. I loved it and I couldn't get it out of my head for weeks. I'm in a dance company, and one of my teachers asked if I could record [the song] and send it to him so he could choreograph a dance. So all of the production is based off of lyrical contemporary dance."
  • Finneas and Billie Eilish uploaded the song to SoundCloud one night so that Billie's dance teacher at the Revolution Dance Center in Los Angeles, Fred Diaz, had it for a show. They woke up the following day to find it had gone viral, opening the doors to their successful recording career. "It gave us something from nothing, which is so unbelievable," Finneas told NME. "So I always have this profound gratitude for that song - obviously, our careers have been built on different moments since then, but that was the thing without which we never had anything."
  • Giving his sister this song was a straightforward decision for Finneas. "I remember doing 'Ocean Eyes' as a band and just being like, 'I'm failing the song,'" he told Rolling Stone Music Now podcast. "And I remember hearing Billie sing it... and it was just like, 'Oh, this is what this song deserves'. Like, this is so beautiful in her register, in her voice. And there was no turning back from that point."
  • In late 2025, "Ocean Eyes" soundtracked a TikTok transition trend where users cover the camera until their eyes fill the frame on the lyric "ocean eyes." Beauty and skincare creators and brand accounts adopted the meme, which drove renewed streaming for the track and its return to the UK Singles chart.

  • AnonymousBridget, she is litterally looking at obviosly looking into two beautifull "ocean" blue eyes, and that moment the can connect on a deep level, and its like every feeling is bursting out all at once and she cant hold it in and burst out cry..
She is expressing her love to mr oceaneyes.
"You really know:.. wich basicly means this person is the only one who can get into her like this. Becuse she has buiilt these strong walls around her so No one can come in, yet he just walks so easily, no matter how big or thick she makes them, he can demolish every single one like its an air bubble. She is feeling love to another human for the first time in her life..... but she is also already kinda emotionall broken, "napalm skies" her sky is burning , yes she is a mess..
But i also thinks burning cities and napalm skies means that The world has become mad, and The citiies actually feels like it burning
And now she falls deeply and truly inlove..
In mattera of minutues she goes from the lowerst depressed bottom to the best feeling ever, super high and euphoric from... so her emotional s--ts unimagineable..And she has no controll of it..
She just let her self fall in it and drown completly In. She has no fear, but she is scared....
Becuse she knows that nothing last forever..
Love is the best thing in her life, but its also the scariest nightmare to lose..

    In short
"You really know how to make cry, when you give me those ocean eyes" means shes has fallen inlove with him..

    Get it now maybe?
