Songfacts®:

  • This was written by Carl Sigman and Bob Russell, with Russell writing the lyrics and Sigman coming up with the melody. Sigman's hits include "It's All In The Game" and "Pennsylvania 6-5000," and Russell's most famous composition is "He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother." Holiday recorded the song with an arrangement by Gordon Jenkins, and while her version is the best-known, it has also been recorded by Linda Ronstadt, Aretha Franklin, Natalie Cole, Peggy Lee, Dinah Washington, Sam Cooke, Tony Bennett and Rod Stewart - the male versions changed to "Crazy She Calls Me."
The song is about being bonkers in love - it's one of the happiest songs Holiday made famous.
