Songfacts®:

  • This song about valuing fatherhood is in the vein of Harry Chapin's "Cat's In The Cradle." It tells the story of a guy who's too busy to make time for his kids, always putting work ahead of family. Unlike Chapin's song, he's redeemed at the end when he comes to his senses and declines a work trip so he can be with his wife and kids.
  • This song rings true for Billy Ray Cyrus, who at the time had five kids, including the soon-to-be-famous Miley Cyrus. In 2000, he had another child, daughter Noah, who also became a singer. Two of his kids - Brandi and Trace - he adopted after marrying their mother, Tish. He remained active in their lives even after he and Tish divorced in 2022.
  • The song was written by George Teren and Bob Regan. Teren also co-wrote "Million Dollar View" by Trace Adkins and "Real Good Man" by Tim McGraw. Regan's credits include "Dig Two Graves" by Randy Travis and "Something About a Woman" by Jake Owen.
  • Billy Ray Cyrus took this song to #3 on the Country chart, his first visit to the Top 10 of that tally since "Somebody New" in 1993. After his pop hit "Achy Breaky Heart," it was a long climb back to credibility in Nashville for Cyrus, although he always enjoyed a very loyal fan base. For years, he starred in the PAX TV show Doc, which enjoyed the highest ratings on the cable network.

  • Erika from West Band, WiOk, this is my favorite song of all time. I'm fifteen years old, and I've been listening to this song my entire life. I remember back when I was around 4 or 5, and I listened to this song constantly. I thought it was the cutest song i'd ever heard, and I still do. It sounds exactly like MY Dad, so this song is kind of an inspiration to me, since he's pretty much a work-aholic. But I just think the song is pretty. Simple, but it gets out a very important meaning to life: enjoy it, because it's short. Here's to you, Billy Ray.... :)
  • Karen from Manchester, NhWho thought to file this under "More songs about an old girlfriend or boyfriend"? This song has NOTHING to do with that.
