Songfacts®:

  • Written in 4/4 time, this song was the work of lyricist A.P. Herbert and composer Henry Sullivan. Herbert, or to give him his full title Sir Alan Patrick Herbert (1890-1971) was among other things, a Member of the British Parliament for 15 years. He was knighted in 1945. "A Nice Cup Of Tea" was written for the revue Home & Beauty, which debuted in 1937, the Coronation Year of George VI. It was performed by Binnie Hale in what might be termed a common accent with a full orchestral accompaniment.
  • Unsurprisingly, "A Nice Cup Of Tea" has also been used to advertise the beverage; in the 1970s in was used in a series of TV ads by Brooke Bond for their D brand, "a nice cup of D." >>>

  • Andy Taylor from ScarboroughWe own a 78rpm recording of Binnie Hale singing “A Nice Cup of Tea” from “Home and Beauty”, which appears to be the only one I can find on the internet. I can’t help wondering how rare this recording is.
