Songfacts®:

  • Written by the husband and wife songwriting team of Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil, this laid-back song was a #1 Adult Contemporary hit for Thomas, following up his massive hit "Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head." Both Barry Mann and Bobby Vee recorded the song before Thomas.
  • Elvis Presley recorded this live on stage during his summer 1970 season at the International Hotel in Las Vegas. While he sang it during almost every show that season it was the performance from the dinner show on August 11 that made it onto the soundtrack album to Elvis' movie Thats The Way It Is and subsequent UK single, which peaked at #6. It is considered one of Elvis' best live performances as both orchestra and vocals are virtually flawless.
It was an interesting time for Elvis, as shortly before the release of this track, Priscilla moved out, taking their daughter Lisa Marie with her. >>>

  • Elvis was backed by The Imperials Quartet on his version, and they also appeared in the movie Thats The Way It Is.
