Songfacts®:

  • Black Country Communion is an Anglo/American rock supergroup featuring vocalist/bassist Glenn Hughes (Deep Purple, Black Sabbath), drummer Jason Bonham (Led Zeppelin), keyboardist Derek Sherinian (Dream Theater) and blues rock guitarist Joe Bonamassa. The band initially came to fruition when renowned producer Kevin Shirley saw Hughes and Bonamassa join forces on stage in Los Angeles in November 2009 for several songs during a performance at the Guitar Center's King of the Blues event. Shirley then recruited Bonham and Sherinian for the project, which is named after the industrial area in the British Midlands where both Hughes and Bonham were born and raised.
  • This is the first single from their self-titled debut album, which was made available as a free download on the group's official web site, www.bccommunion.com.
  • Bonamassa told Gibson.com about the song: "Glenn's responsible for the verses and chorus, and I came up with the solo section on the spot, with encouragement of course!"
  • Bonamassa told Gibson.com about the guitar/rig set-up he used on this track. "1968 plexi panel Super Bass Marshall and my trusty Jubilee Marshall. A tube screamer and EV-12L speakers in vintage Marshall cabinets. I don't like the original speakers. Not clear enough. But it's me and I'm weird like that."
  • Hughes told Nightwatcher's House of Rock he is proud of this song's lyric as it, "is a winning song." He added: "It's for winners. You know, 'You're the one last soul, you can win it.' Basically it's a song for winners. It's something I don't really write about all that much actually. Rock n' roll is supposed to be dark, and stark. But this is a shining beacon of light for people who want to win."
  • Hughes told Nightwatcher's House of Rock about the recording of Black Country: "We recorded this album with no playbacks. Kevin cut each song twice. The songs were rehearsed by the band directly before the cuts were recorded. I would show the guys the song and the chords... first I'd show Joe, we'd talk about it, then Jason and Derek would hear it. We'd talk about it for twenty minutes, perhaps put a chorus here and there, then the red light would go on to record it. Then twenty minutes later we'd have a completed song. That's the way the album was recorded. When you hear Joe or Derek's solos, there's no rhythm behind it. It's live. Even some of the vocals…'One Last Soul,' 'Medusa' and some of 'Black Country' were all done live vocally."
