Songfacts®:

  • Black Sheep's first single, "Flavor Of The Month" is a shot at the rappers who fade fast after they get some heat. The hook is based on the Pringles potato chips jingle: "I've got the fever for the flavor of a Pringles."
  • There weren't many North Carolina hip-hop acts in the early '90s, but that's where the two members of Black Sheep - producer William "Mista Lawnge" McLean and rapper Andres "Dres" Titus - met. They parted ways after high school but met up again in New York City, where McLean had hooked up with DJ Red Alert and was making a name for himself on the turntables. They ended up joining the Native Tongues collective of A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, and Jungle Brothers, and landing a record deal. "Flavor Of The Month" got some airplay on hip-hop radio and the video was played on BET, but it was the next Black Sheep single that became their breakout: "The Choice Is Yours."
  • Black Sheep songs from this time were built from samples layered together by Mista Lawnge, who did lots of crate-digging to find them. "Flavor Of The Month" starts with the bass line from "I Wonder" by Bubble Gum Machine and the drums from "Upon This Rock" by Jimmy Madison. It also uses "In A Little Spanish Town" by Herb Alpert and "You Know You Know" by Mahavishnu Orchestra.
