Songfacts®:

  • Written by Blackberry Smoke frontman and primary lyricist Charlie Starr, this song is about a man who blames the town he lives in for his problems. "It's about a guy who has just had it with his hometown," Starr explained to Entertainment Weekly. "He says, 'To hell with it! I'm out of here!'"
  • As the song progresses, listeners realize the problem is his fault and nothing to do with the location. "He might be a ne'er-do-well," Starr admitted. "Maybe he's the one bringing this on himself - regardless, he's leaving and he doesn't care if the town burns to the ground."
  • Charlie Starr was raised in rural Lanett, Alabama, and readily relates to the man he's singing about. "I know that guy," he said. "In fact, I might have been that guy. A lot of people that I know, myself included, have blamed our problems on a place or a person or a certain situation. Sometimes you just can't see that it's your fault."
