Songfacts®:

  • This song tells the story of a tree that was once used as a hanging tree for lynchings. Lead singer Candice Night wrote it after contemplating a venerable tree near her childhood home. "Its branches were blackened with time," she told Songfacts. "I had seen so many people stop and take photos of it. It was like artwork, nature creating an amazing sculpture. I made up this story about what it would've been like if it was used as a hanging tree hundreds of years ago and how it would've felt. It's basically the story from the tree's perspective."
  • Night wrote the lyrics to this song in about five minutes, as they just flowed out of her. Ritchie Blackmore added the track, and the song became a centerpiece of their third album, Fires at Midnight.
  • Candice Night's father was not a fan of the tree she wrote this song about. "That it the ugliest tree I ever saw!," he told her as they were driving past it one day. As soon as they got by the tree, the car battery died and the car stopped. "He never insulted the tree again," Night said.
  • Running to 3 minutes 44 seconds, "Hanging Tree" is track 8 on the 2001 Fires At Midnight album, and a full-bodied acoustic arrangement. >>>
