Songfacts®:

  • "Once In A Garden" was written by Candice Night, who is much more likely to compose a lilting song about childhood innocence than her husband and bandmate, Ritchie Blackmore. "It was the acknowledgement of that very private part of me that still celebrates the little girl inside," she said in her Songfacts interview. "I always thought it was so important to see through the eyes of a child and I always tried to keep that inner part of me very much alive. It helps you to appreciate the simplest things in life, but in that simplicity is such complexity and magic: the colors of a sunset, the perfumed air of spring, a shooting star, the wind through your hair, a snow fall."
  • A few years after this song was recorded, the Blackmore/Night tandem had two children: daughter Autumn and son Rory. In 2015, Night released a new version of this song on her album Starlight Starbright, which was inspired by Autumn and Rory, who appear in the video they made for this version. Part of the video was shot in Germany with some local children.
