Songfacts®:

  • Candice Night is the lead vocalist and lyricist for Blackmore's Night, and also Ritchie Blackmore's wife. This supernatural-themed rock-based song came from watching the animated feature Brave with the couple's two young children, Rory and Autumn. "I didn't know about the Celtic folklore of the Will O' the Wisp until I saw the wisps that were appearing in the movie that basically led the character of Merida through the forest and through the stone circles to the witches cottage," Night recalled to Billboard magazine. "It caused me to do more research into these little lighted beings that appear and disappear and change your life, change your fate through the woodlands. It was fascinating."

The Will-o'-the-Wisp can be found in numerous ancient folk tales around the United Kingdom. It refers to an atmospheric ghost light that guide ancient travelers at night. Often malicious, in many of the stories they draw travelers from the safe paths.
