Songfacts®:

  • BlackPink is a K-pop girl group formed by YG Entertainment, consisting of members Jisoo, Jennie, Rosé and Lisa. This is the lead single from their EP Square Up, and the song finds the girls fiercely warning people that they will do anything to achieve success. Jennie's verse translates as:

A kind face and an attitude that isn't
A volume twice the size hidden in a slender figure
Relentlessly going forward, not caring what other people think
When you say Black we say Pink, we are pretty Savage

BlackPink are bad girls and refuse to act nice like other people.
  • "Ddu-Du Ddu-Du" was written and co-produced by YG Entertainment's in-house producer Teddy Park, who has been behind many of K-pop's biggest hits, including PSY's "Daddy" and CL's "Lifted."
  • The song debuted at #55 on the Hot 100. In doing so it broke the record for the highest-charting hit ever by a K-pop girl group on the listing overtaking Wonder Girls, whose "Nobody" peaked at #76 in 2009.

Blackpink's record was broken by another of their songs when "Kill This Love" debuted at #41 on the Hot 100 dated April 20, 2019.
  • The song's music video was the first-ever by a K-pop group to clock up 1 billion views on YouTube. Solo artist PSY had previously achieved the feat with "Gangnam Style" and "Gentleman."
