Songfacts®:

  • This breakup anthem was written by YG Entertainment's in-house producer Teddy Park and American singer-songwriter Bekuh BOOM. The pair previously collaborated on BlackPink's single "Ddu-Du Ddu-Du."
  • The song starts off with Jennie singing about the highs of falling in love and the lows of breaking up. Translated into English, she is saying:

After a sweet "hi," there's always a bitter "bye"
After every crazy high, there's a price you have to pay
There's no answer to this test I'll always fall for it yes

Jennie acknowledges the relationship is about to end and its time to "kill this love."
  • The fourth verse, bridge and outro are delivered entirely in English, which is a rarity in K-pop. More typically, K-Pop is sung in Korean with maybe a sprinkling of a few English phrases. This indicates the song is aimed at the American market.
  • The music video, directed by Hyun Seung Seo, features the band in various scenarios, including singer Rosé tearfully driving a car with intent to kill another version of herself. There are also elements and references to Greek mythology.
  • "Kill This Love" set a new record for fastest viewed video on YouTube, reaching 56.7 million views within 24 hours of release, overtaking Ariana Grande's "Thank U, Next."

Furthermore, the clip became the fastest video to reach 100 million views on YouTube, taking two days and 14 hours to hit the milestone - beating the record held by Psy's "Gentleman."

Both records were broken just a week later by BTS' "Boy With Luv."
  • Blackpink performed this song for the first time on their comeback stage on MBC's Show Music Core on April 6, 2019.
  • The song debuted at #41 on the Hot 100 dated April 20, 2019. In doing so it broke the record for the highest-charting hit ever by a K-pop girl group on the listing overtaking another BlackPink song "Ddu-Du Ddu-Du," which peaked at #55 in June 2018.
