Songfacts®:

  • The writer of "Rock Of Ages," The Reverend Augustus Toplady, once calculated that a typical person who reaches the age of 80 will have committed 2,522,880,000 sins. Here, over an acoustic guitar, Blake Shelton reflects on his battle to live up to the teachings of the Good Book when it's so easy to go astray.
  • Shelton is honest about his failure to keep on the straight and narrow.

But I keep praying for the day
That I can open up that good book
    And Heaven don't look
    Like it's out of reach

Although he can't stop sinning, he remains gentle on himself.

I'm just tryin' to give myself a little grace
'Til those words and me get on the same page
  • Joe Fox, Andrew Peebles and Brett Sheroky wrote the gentle acoustic song. All three are newcomers, and this was their first credit with a major Nashville artist. "No matter where you are in your faith, there are times you feel like you just don't measure up," Shelton explained. "I just want it to read like Bible verses and not the Bible versus me."

"'Bible Verses' is an honest take on that conflict," the singer added, "but, without preaching too much, it's hopeful that everything will all work out in the end."
  • Shelton recorded "Bible Verses" for his Body Language album. Outside writers penned all 12 songs; Shelton did not write or co-write any of them.
