Songfacts®:

  • This anthemic and nostalgic track finds guitarist Matt Skiba and bassist Mark Hoppus recounting their misspent youths and blink-182 early days. They remember their humble beginnings, which made them the band they are today.

I was bored to death, so I started a band
Cut my teeth on a safety dance
My attention span never stood a chance

After Mark Hoppus moved to San Diego in 1992 he didn't know many people; he spent most of his early days there alone and bored. Hoppus' sister, Anne, was dating one of Tom DeLonge's best friends and she introduced him to Tom DeLonge. Together with drummer Scott Raynor, they formed the band blink-182. Skipa replaced DeLonge in 2015.
  • The song originated from a hip-hop inspired beat created by drummer Travis Barker, which Hoppus and Skippa developed further. They were helped by producer Tim Pagnotta, best known for his work with Neon Trees, plus writers Sam Hollander and Matt Malpass.
  • The song features a lyric video by renowned graffiti artist Risk in which he spells out the lyrics on a wall.
  • "Blame It On My Youth" was given its live debut on June 20, 2019. The band performed the song during the encore portion of a secret show for fans at USC's Galen Center in Los Angeles.
