Songfacts®:

  • The Magic Whip is Blur's eighth studio album. It is the band's first LP since 2003's Think Tank, marking the longest gap between two studio albums in their career, and their first with guitarist Graham Coxon since 13 in 1999.
  • This was the first song to be released from The Magic Whip. Graham Coxon explained to NME why this was chosen as the first taster from the album: "It wasn't a jolly, winking, overfamiliar Blur thing," he said. "I realize that a lot of people love below because of those songs, and lots of people hate them because of it, and people from the camp who hate us probably don't know much about the other stuff that we did."

"'Go Out' struck me as being somewhere between the two – it's sort of casual sounding, but it's also quite powerful. For me, it felt like a place that we hadn't really done before: it's mildly familiar because of Damon (Albarn)'s voice, but sonically is quite different from anything we've done before."
  • Designer/director Tony Hung did the album's artwork and this song's lyric video, which picks up on its ice cream theme. He told NME regarding the clip. "The band just wanted something that encapsulated the song and the vibe of the record. I shot it and showed it to them, and they liked it."
