Songfacts®:

  • Bobby Shmurda laid down this breakthrough song after spending time in detention for violating a probation. The track is actually titled "Hot Nigga," but is known as "Hot Boy" in places where the 'n' word is censored.
  • This features the beat from Lloyd Banks' song "Jackpot." Shmurda recalled to Complex magazine: "I heard that beat, and it spoke to me. That's what music do to me. I been liked music, but I was always into other stuff. I got mad talent. But when I heard that beat I was like, I got to go on it."

"I had just came home from detention," he continued. "So my friend was rapping and his music inspired me and I had bars from that little time, so he was like, 'Just lay it down on a track.' I laid it down and that was 'Hot Nigga.'"
  • This song blew up thanks to the Shmoney Dance on its video. The clip became popular among users of popular social media app Vine and soon led to the "Shmoney dance" meme. Even Beyoncé did the move during her On the Run Tour.

Shmurda says it wasn't contrived. "I didn't even know it was gonna be a dance - we just did it," he explained.
  • The instrumentation was originally used on Lloyd Banks' "Jackpot," but that song didn't pick up much heat and according to producer Jahil Beats the rapper never paid for it anyway. The beatmaker was only to happy when Shmurda asked if he could spit some of his rhymes over his production. "Bobby brought it to life and turned it into a club anthem," Jahil Beats told Billboard magazine. "He really took advantage of the track - the way he flowed on it, the way he came in when the bass drops out, how he made the buildup go into the drop - it was a work of art. People don't think too deep into it, but there's really a science to it."
  • T.I., French Montana and Fat Joe have all laid down unofficial remixes of the track.
