Runga herself said that it was inspired by Sade: "When I was younger I used to love Sade. Her smooth voice and long relaxed phrasing were very different [from] the other music that was popular at the time. "Airwave" reminds me a little of the way I felt when I listened to Sade. It’s a little melancholy but melodic with it."

Although it is possible to imagine Sade singing this song, the last thing the eldest of the enormously talented Runga sisters needs to do is imitate anyone else. >>>
