Songfacts®:

  • This song is a collaboration between singer-songwriter Liz Lawrence and Bombay Bicycle Club bassist Ed Nash. Lawrence is a friend of the band, having toured with them in the past and featured on the song "Party for Two," a track recorded for Nash's solo project, Toothless.
  • Lawrence and Nash originally wrote "People People" for an EP they planned to make together, which didn't work out. Nash felt the song had a place on Everything Else Has Gone Wrong so he asked her to duet with their vocalist, Jack Steadman.
  • "People People" was initially penned by Lawrence about her father, but Bombay Bicycle Club changed its meaning. Guitarist Jamie McCall explained to The Sun: "The song is about companionship rather than romantic love. It's about helping one another to navigate the increasingly messed up world we live in."
  • Jack Steadman has form for getting female singers on board. Other Bombay Bicycle Club collaborators include Rae Morris ("Overdone," "So Long, See You Tomorrow," "Luna") and frequent collaborator Lucy Rose ("Shuffle," "Home By Now", plus several others).

Steadman told Apple Music: "I enjoy singing with other people. It tends to be female singers. I always write really high parts for my voice, and rather than me sound like a eunuch, I think it's nice to get in other people who can actually hit those notes."
