Songfacts®:

  • Jon Bon Jovi wrote this song for the 2019 Netflix documentary film To Be of Service. The film follows war veterans suffering from Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) back home and explores the comfort brought to them by security dogs.
  • Jon Bon Jovi has a military heritage - his parents met when both were in the US Marine Corps in the late 1950s. He penned "Unbroken" from the perspective of a soldier dealing with PTSD back home in America.

"This song is meant to honor America's veterans and their service, but I also wanted to take an unflinching look at the reality of their daily lives and struggles," said the frontman.
  • Island Records and Bon Jovi donated 100% of net proceeds from the download of "Unbroken" during its first year of release to the Patriotic Service Dog Foundation.
  • Jon Bon Jovi recorded a new charity version of the song at Abbey Road's Studio 2, where The Beatles recorded most of their albums. It is a collaboration with The Invictus Games Choir, a choral group made up of British military veterans and serving personnel. Prince Harry joined the singer at the recording and proceeds from the record are being donated to Harry's Invictus Games Foundation.

Jon Bon Jovi has previously said that Prince William can sing, after the royal performed "Livin' On A Prayer" with himself and Taylor Swift at a 2013 charity gala.
