Songfacts®:

  • This is the title track of the twelfth studio album by rock band Bon Jovi. Jon Bon Jovi explained during a London press conference on January 23, 2013 that the record documents a "moment in time – a post-first-term Obama, where America was and is." He added: "That moment in time almost forced the record to come out, because otherwise the time would pass and the subject matter becomes dated."
  • Jon Bon Jovi told USA Today that he wrote songs for What About Now with the plight of common people in mind. "[It has] a strong social overview,' he explained. "We were heading into the end of [President Barack] Obama's first term, and America was in recovery but still teetering. Europe was teetering, too; austerity plans were or weren't going to take effect. So it's sort of a snapshot of that period, though I hope it will also be timeless."
  • The What About Now album debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200. It was Bon Jovi's fifth chart-topper.
