Songfacts®:

  • Boy Meets Girl are songwriters George Merrill and Shannon Rubicam. They met in the early '80s, formed a romantic and musical partnership, and released the first Boy Meets Girl album in 1985, the same year they wrote Whitney Houston's hit "How Will I Know." Reel Life was their second album, and featured the hit "Waiting For A Star To Fall." They got married after the album was released, but were going through a rough time in their relationship when they were working on it. George and Shannon spoke to us about this song:

George: "Bring Down The Moon really goes into detail about some of the things that are seemingly unattainable in a relationship, and some of the things we set out in front of us."

Shannon: "They're about as reachable as the moon. The romantic notions and fantasies that it represents in a song sense or poems or any kind of literature."

George: "I think as Shannon and I re-approached a life together, one of the things that we realized is that it was important to take some of those things unattainable and figure out ways to make them a part of our lives."

Shannon: "And so that was the mythic and mighty that fall when you lean. I had the visual in my head about how you have a movie set and often times the things in the movie set are not real. So that nice big solid wall, if you leaned on it it would just collapse on you, because it's really nothing."
  • George and Shannon separated around 2000 but continue making music together. Their 2003 album The Wonderground deals with the emotions and challenges of their breakup - what it's like to go through an intense romantic partnership and keep their friendship and working relationship in tact.
