Songfacts®:

  • Husband and wife songwriting teams like Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich, Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil, and Nickolas Ashford and Valerie Simpson have written many legendary songs throughout the ups and down of their relationships, but it's rare for a couple to make an album in the midst of a breakup. Boy Meets Girl are George Merrill and Shannon Rubicam, and The Wonderground deals with the emotions of continuing their relationship as friends, songwriting partners and parents after the end of their marriage. This song was written before they contemplated separation, but it took on new significance when they re-worked it for the album. Says Rubicam: "We co-wrote that with a friend, Allen Glass. I don't know if it was just one of those unconscious precursors, or if we just happened to write that song because we were writing with another guy and we were showing ideas. We ended up doing some re-writing on it for our album, because it did definitely seem to fit: taking in how it feels, and being on your own after having gotten used to being with somebody else, and all of the new things about that." (Thanks to George and Shannon for speaking with us about this song. Check out the Boy Meets Girl website at www.boymeetsgirlmusic.com.)
